I have enjoyed this class so much. I think it is probably in my top three favorite classes I have taken at UC. It was interesting, engaging, and introduced me to a topic that I had very little experience with. I was enrolled in a different history class, but when I got the email that had the description for this class, I knew I had to take it. I got to class on the first day and there were only 7 people in the class, including the professor and me. I remember asking my friends if I should drop the class before the first word was even said. I was worried but after hearing the description of the class and learning more, I was definitely going to stay. I was so excited to listen to the professors speak about their time at UC. The 60’s and 70’s was a time when there was a lot going on. I remember listening to the professors and being absolutely fascinated at how cool they were. I am sorry for using the word cool, but I am struggling to figure out another word to describe it. The next class when we were assigned professors, I was so excited to begin, but also completely terrified. Dr. Huether was beyond accomplished and had contributed so much to the university. I did not know anything about the kind of research we would be doing. I mean I had done research papers, but I basically would just Google things and hope for the best or use a database. The books we read were incredibly helpful in easing my fears and worries about both research and the actual interview. I think it was helpful to do research before the interview. It was easier to create questions. I had never used Ancestry before. It was amazing how much we were able to find. We found his father’s draft card, his parents’ graves, and his college yearbook. Going to Gray and Pape was interesting as well. I did not know that there were historians who specialized in that kind of work. I do not know if it as incredibly helpful in writing our paper, but the content was super fascinating. I had absolutely no experience with anything like the Archives and Rare Books. It was so interesting to look through the folders they had compiled for us. It helped us learn a good deal about different things that we might not have learned from just talking with Dr. Huether. Before the interview, I was so worried but he was so nice. The interview was very casual and he put both Rachel and I at ease. The whole interview process was probably one the most difficult things because there were so many parts to it. After the interview, Rachel and I both said “we should have asked this question and I wish we would have asked about, etc.” The interview went really well and produced the results that we needed. Dr. Huether was very accessible throughout the entire process which made our job a lot easier. The paper was more easy than I had imagined. It was helpful because we had smaller essays due throughout before the longer essay was due. That way when we went to write the longer essay, we could just combine and edit the other essays. One of my favorite parts of the whole process was talking to his students. They still admired him so many years later. They were the nicest people. I cannot even imagine how they must have thought when they received an email from a random student at UC. They were so much more helpful than I would have thought. When Rachel and I first emailed them, we assumed only two of them would actually reply. They all replied, shortly after we sent it. I think at max only two days passed before the very last person replied. I did not have the chance to talk to all of them, but the ones I talked to only spoke highly of Dr. Huether. There were so many elements of this class that were so fascinating. I feel like I sound like I’m lying but there honestly were not any elements of this class that I disliked. One thing I did not know how to feel about at first was the class discussion of our papers. It was helpful to hear the progress people had made and where they had found information. Feedback is always important and helpful, so receiving that from both our classmates and the professor made the process easier. I have gained both research and communication skills and also have gained a deeper appreciation for University of Cincinnati. I learned how to do more effective and frankly, better research. I utilized many resources and as a result was able to write a better and more accurate paper. I was able to learn about many services and places that I did not know about until I took this class. I learned how to effectively communicate whether it be in an interview or email. I learn about communication every day as a Communication major, but this helped further my skills even as a history class. Finally, I gained a better appreciation for UC. I have always loved UC and have never regretted my decision to come here, but this class helped reiterate just how incredible of a place UC is. We heard from professors who retired many years ago or somewhat recent and they still talk highly of the school. Dr. Huether worked at UC for forty-one years and continues to do work for the school, almost ten years after he retired. This is definitely one of my favorite classes I have ever taken and I am really glad that you are offering it again in the Spring!
